Blog Post #1: Introduction

Hello! My name is Jagjeevan but everyone calls me Jag. I am currently in Abbotsford B.C. where I was born and raised. My native languages are Punjabi and English and I have learned some common Korean and am now trying to learn some Spanish as I would like to travel to Mexico soon and like being able to speak to locals! I previously completed a certificate for Interior design at BCIT, worked within the field for a year in Chilliwack as an AutoCAD Technician, but switched paths to computer science which I just completed my 2nd year in. Computer science and cooking-related courses are my favourites and I wish there were culinary course offerings here. Some of my favourite things to do include cooking, going to the gym, learning web development, playing golf or basketball, learning Spanish and spending time with my niece. I hope to get into running or gardening this season as well.

As growing up all learning in school was done in person, at the same pace, and at the same level of difficulty, I found the pacing of some courses to be uncomfortable. There have been many times where I was able to grasp a concept quickly only for the next learning concept to be introduced a while later ruining the momentum gained. When I was in second grade my class was practicing our basic addition in a short quiz called “Mad Minutes”. These quizzes would be a short list of questions containing simple questions like 9 + 4, 4 + 3 etc.. When my teacher noticed another student and I would finish considerably faster than our peers, she would seperately keep track of our speed as a way for us to be encouraged to become faster at these quizzes. This was one of the first times the traditional flow of the class was broken to facilitate further growth from a student and it made me more excited to continue practicing a topic I believed I was already great at.

Now taking courses at UVIC, I can appreciate the potential asynchronous courses can have for a wide variety of topics. Being able to take extra time where I may need or finish a section I found easy early allows for a lot more flexibility in my day to day life. Another way I have used digital tools to facilitate learning has been taking a course through Udemy. I enrolled for a full-stack web development course on that platform which has allowed me to continue practicing and improving my coding skills why away from campus.
